The Origo has higher heat output? In the past I've heard non-pressurized alcohol stoves have lower heat output.

Origo rates their burners at 7,000 BTU's each. I don't how that compares to other stoves. I can cook anything on my Origo that you can on another stove. The other thing I know is my wife is a burn unit nurse for 23 years and I was a fireman for 21 years and we have seen boats and people burn due to stoves, both pressurized alcohol and propane. We bought a new boat in 1999 and had the propane stove deleted in favor of the Origo. I have never 2nd guessed that decision.

Jim-

The Coleman stove fuel is basically unleaded gasoline more than anything else. It is designed for a totally different type of stove. Using it in a pressurized alcohol stove could be very dangerous. DON'T DO IT.

The fuel for an alcohol stove, pressurized or not, is the same denatured alcohol that you can get in any hardware store paint section.

Certainly my Coleman lantern (which I loaned out and never got back) never gave me any trouble. And tho I don't think I actually ever used my little backpack camp stove (got out of the camping hobby soon after acquiring it), I don't recall having any trouble getting it going, either.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

My statement regarding heat output is based on my experience with boiling a pot of water on each. It boils much faster on the Origo. As was stated, the rated output for the Origo is 7000 Btu/hr. Most propane burners are 5000 to 7000 Btu/hr. Have never seen specs on a Kenyon pressurized alcohol burner.

I see. Interesting: I don't recall it smelling at all like gasoline. My recollection was that it smelled more like alcohol than anything else. Perhaps my memory's faulty. It has been quite a few years.

I can imagine burning a petroleum product of any kind in an enclosed area, esp. an area as small as a sailboat cabin (well, most of 'em, anyway) would probably be a Very Bad Idea.

Of course not. I was just wondering why marine stoves apparently don't use the same fuel, being as, in my experience, Coleman-type lanterns, stoves, etc. are generally pretty easy to work with. Perhaps I have my answer.
