Bottom Paint

I need some advice. My boat yard recently painted the bottom on my Hunter 45-1986. The old bottom paint was copperepoxy which was very unsatisfactory and we covered it with Petit Ultima SR. Instructions from both the paint mfgs (copperepoxy and Pettit) indicated that all you need do is rough up (80 grit sand paper) the old copper epoxy and then apply the Petti. My boat yard billed me $4,000 for this work. I''m disputing this bill. They claim it was necessary to build a plastic tent around the boat. $1600. and that they applied five gallons of Pettit. $1000. plus labor at $60.00 per hr. Anyone have any idea what this work should cost?

A plastic tent? Why? If it was to contain sanding residue one can do that easlily with a shop vac connected to the sander. 5 gallons of paint is reasonable as is the $60/hour for labor. Did they give you an estimate before they did this? I assume they put 2 coats of paint on and that they billed you for around 23 hours of labor? If so, I think the labor charge is inflated as well. They basically charged you $89/foot which is close to what it would cost you to awlgrip the hull. I would fight it. Boatyards usually have a flat rate per foot to prep and paint the bottom.
