I am going to do something similar on my N17, but it will be a smaller vent near the bow using a muffin fan inside. Another N17 owner has this set up and posted pictures and info on Yahoo. Anyway, you generally have a passive vent at the companionway, so putting an active one near to bow causes air to circulate better. A muffin fan draws very little power and a small solar battery charger actually stays ahead of it according to him.

When I added the first of two solar powered vents to my boat, in much the same location as the OP is talking about, the interior of the cabin when I get to the boat was about 15˚ cooler than it had been previously. So, I'd say it was worth it.
