recommend a bilge alarm?...

My old ship has a very narrow and deep bilge.

Years ago I saw a bilge alarm that worked on what I believe was called a "magic eye". I liked the look of it as it was on the end of a wee stainless pole and I could easily adjust the depth at which it triggered by slackening a wee thumb screw and sliding it up or down in the aft corner of the bilge wall.

I have looked for something similar today, but have failed.

Does anyone know of it?

no, but we used something similar on dad's Tayana 42 because the bilge is cavernous. We rigged a float switch (easily obtainable) on a SS rod that sits down in the bilge. Easy to set the depth and access for maintenance. At least that is an alternate solution.

You could make much the same thing with a piece of PVC pipe, a cork float, a threaded rod and an automatic float switch.

Does the orthodox float switch not flop up and down in a pitching sea?

I can imagine in the Perfect Storm that switch might pop up as they were going airborne. Short of that you will be fine.
