My 1973 Barlows dissemble the usual way: with an Allen key directly in the center under the star-shaped winch socket. But my biggest is a 28 or something, and is bronze, non-self-tailing.
Two tips: Lewmar pawls and springs will work OK if you lose something, and cut a winch-base-sized hole in a cardboard box and place it over the winch you are dissembling.
You can buy me a rum later.
