Universal to Yanmar

I own a Catalina 30 with a rusted out Universal 11 hp diesel. I have access to a Yanmar 3gm30. Has anybody installed this engine in this or a similiar size boat? Is it to big an engine? How diffucult was the installation. Any advice would be appreciated.

Universal to Yanmar

My father had a 3GM30 in his Hunter 30 and I have a 3GM30 in my Farr 38. All three weigh aproximately 10,500 lbs and at least from my experience this seems to be a good engine for that weight. The Yanmar 3GM30 has a continuous output of around 24 HP and that is pretty close to the Universal triples that were an option in the Catalina 30.

Weighing in at about 10,000 lbs overall we have a Yanmar 2gm 16hp. It moves us very well and has been easy to maintain. I did not do the installation but it looks very straight forward.
We have about 2100 hrs on the engine, it uses no oil and at 2200 rpm''s we use about "1 quart" of fuel per hour.
I would recomment the Yanmar engines in any retrofit.
