RAYMARINE S1 Wheel Pilot

Is the Raymarine S1 the only wheel pilot out there for boats 35 ft and under? I know you can still buy new the Simrad WP-30CX and I am aware that it has been discontinued. It is also about $500 cheaper. Any feedback?

Thanks,
Paul

We recently installed the S1, selected to integrate with the C80 display and Raymarine GPS/chartplotter. Other than the fact that it reacts slower than I do, and definitely can't anticipate, we're happy with the unit, especially as compared to its predecessor, the belt-driven Autohelm 3000. Can't comment on the market in general, which is what I think you are seeking.

Last year I installed a new Sinrad WP-32, four times, on my boat. In between installations it went to the Simrad shop for repair, coming back with the same/another problem (lack of available new parts was the explanation I received). After the last time, the store I purchased it from just refunded the value I payed for the unit, without a fuss.

You may find a new unit somewhere but, should something go wrong you may end up in the same situation I was. I'm sure Simrad have good quality control but you'll can always get a lemon, and your store may not be so understanding. I learned to stay away from discontinued items.

BTW the S1 is working just fine, but it's a lot harder to install; too many components.

Good luck on your choice.

I just discarded my Simrad WP30 which was installed as a quick repair by the previous owner and installed an S1. I am very happy with it, especially the wireless remote
