Changing oil in 5411 Diesel

The time has come to change oil in my recently purchased 1982 Catalina 30 with the 5411 Universal Diesel. Is there any specific oil I need to use? I have jug of Delo 400. Will it do?

Any decent diesel lube oil will do it. Make sure that it is for diesel engines.

I have never heard of Delo 400. Is it for a diesel motor?

Delo is good stuff. The other good choice is Rotella, if you want to stick with conventional oil.

I'm running my Phasor generator (Kubota diesel) on Valvoline full synthetic, and have had very good luck with it. If you decide to switch to a synthetic, it's worthwhile to do one oil change with it, and follow it up in short order with a second one--say in ten hours or after one weekend's use. That will get the last of the conventional oil out of the system.

Hey fellow 5411 owner. The oil grade is specified in the manual for the engine. If you do not have the manual I have posted the link to a pdf copy for you.

Refer to manual page 3/pdf page 4. In the chart above half way down it says to use SAE 30 (CD) or 10W40 heavy duty diesel lubricating oil. Oil capacity of the 5411 is 2.2 QTs so buy accordingly. But keep in mind the oil chang procedure; you will extract the old oil through the dip stick so you won't get it all out. Hope this helps!
