lines

Time to replace some lines.

Wondering about the difference between Yale, Sampson & New England and others. Saw some Aamstrand at less than 1/2 the price of NE.

Also confused about all the different types of braids. My main need is for mainsail furler. I can use the same line for dingy davit lines and others.

Looking to buy a spool of the best choice, probably 250'.

Rope

Please do yourself a favor and look at cajuntrading.ca, they are in Nova Scotia. I have used them for several years. The product is great and the price can't be beat. My entire boat is rigged with their stuff. The last thing I bought was a new spinnaker halyard to replace one I managed to wreck. Even with shipping here to Southern California it was cheaper than the local West Marine, and I think the quality is better.

I'll Second That

Just used Cajun Trading to replace 2 halyards and misc other control lines. They easily beat Defender/WM prices by 20-30% Quality seems very good. My only minor complaint is delay in shipping...About 3 weeks from order to receipt of lines, quick email response from the company though, they were out of stock on one of my requested lines when I ordered it.

Anyone try Sailnet for line? Besides providing this web forum, they do operate a chandlery.

Has practical sailor or anyone else done any comparison of Cajun Trading lines? I have bought some things from them on ebay and they use good hardware (wichard shackles etc). But I would be reluctant to trust halyards to a brand I didn't know unless I saw some specific analysis. The idea that they "beat Defender or WM" isn't comparing "apples to Apples." Defender sells Sampson and others and West Marine New England Ropes.

But that is not to say that Cajun Trading isn't just as good; I would just prefer to see something specific on it by an independent testing lab.

They have their own breaking strength analysis (below), and if its correct it is convincing.

Cajun XLE 1/2" - 8,500 lbs
New England Ropes (STA SET) 1/2" - 8,200 lbs
Sampson XLS 1/2" - 8,300 lbs

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I plan on buying a 250' spool of 3/8".

Chuckles
Do you remember if there was anything significant in the PS review?

I ordered my new halyards, furling lines and such from The Splice Girls, which is run by two women here in the South Coast area.

The 85' 10 mm T-900 halyards were about $140 each, with a splice and whipped end. I supplied the shackle. Bulk 10 mm T-900 was about $1.50 a foot, versus $2.40 or so at the best places online.

The Cajun Trading company wanted $200.55 for the 3/8" spectra-core line 85' halyard with them supplying the shackle. I can get a shackle for a lot less than $60 bucks, and that doesn't even count in the shipping costs. The Wichard 5/16" captive screw pin thimble shackles are about $37.

If you decide to order from them...tell them Dan with the trimaran said Hi!

WM is presently doing 30% off on bulk line. We just replaced our old foresail sheets with this stuff: West Marine: EnduraBraid Dyneema Double Braid Product Display

Only sailed with it once, so far, but I was pleased with its performance.
