I am in the market for a "hand held" GPS with chartplotter. What is recommended? I want to keep it under $500 . Thanks for your input.

I recently bought a Garmin 76S, which retails for about $450, but can be found (on some auction websites) for a bit less.

It has all the functions you mentioned, and lots more. Besides WAAS, it has a built-in barometer for use in determining altitude or weather prediction. Tide data is included, and the unit can hold up to 25 MB of data.

To get the most out of it, you will need to load data from one or more Garmin CD-ROMs. For use as a chartplotter you''ll need to load BlueChart data for the area in which you predominately sail. (BTW, they say it floats, but I have no intention of testing that claim. ;^)

I have a GPSMAP 76; it is a little less than the "S" model as it does not have the barometer and such. Built in base map is quite good but I choose to get the Blue Chart CD and was able to load up my extended sailing area into the unit. This is my 4th garmin gps and would recommend it without hesitation. The screen is small so make sure you can read it before you buy it.

Hi,
Check out these two websites.
http://celia.mehaffey.com/dale/
http://joe.mehaffey.com/

They are the GPS equivelent to the "Mother of All Maritime Links". If you don''t know what this website is, do a search for it...but have a couple of pizza''s and a case of your favorite beverage...you''ll be there for days!
Way too much information for the human mind!
Enjoy!

I''ve had 5 gps''s. When I was hunting I got a Garmin 45...used it on my fishing boat too. Well, now I''ve got a Garmin 176c, mounted it on my Edson pedistal and ran 12v power to get away from battery crunching. Just got back from NE US 1 month trip and it was the best unit I''ve ever seen. The chips can add up in the dollar department, but you can lay out your plan for the next day shot by taking L/L off paper charts or by using the charts thats in the gps. If you can spend 25-50 bucks more than 500, you''ll be AMAZED and happier, IMHO.
