transducer problem??

I have a Raymarine st 4ooo knot meter with an Airmar transducer. Was working properly early in season. Stopped working about 10 days ago. Pulled it out and removed a bunch of crud ( a technical term). Reinstalled but still didn't work. Took it out and spun by hand. It recorded speed. Reinstalled. Started out showing zero, then went to 9 knots and slowly dropped to zero.
Anyone with any wisdom?? Forgive any spelling issues. Its the wine.
Don

You probably have growth around the outside of the hole where the transducer is, so you're not getting consistent flow over the paddlewheel.

My daughter went for the swim. Much as PBzeer said, still a bit of crud on the housing edge impeding the impeller. Workes proprely yesterday.
