Volvo MD2B owners - need info

I''m wondering if the MD2B is still supported by Volvo and thought those currently owning one would know. Are new parts available (e.g. lower end bearings or a mechanical lift pump) or just gasket kits and such?

If you could give me a feel for how tough it is to rebuild this engine, I''d surely appreciate it. Thanks.

Jack

I rebuilt my MD2B with MS reverse gear from the crankshaft to the valve covers in 1998. I looked at the guy quoting me $75/hr, looked at the manual, and did it myself. Parts are expensive, but show up fast from sweden. The manual needs to be reviewed carefully, as I found misplaced decimal points when torquing down the head to accommodate the .008 shims under the heads. You also need to disconnect the shaft if you lift the engine slightly to get at the access port on the starboard side to install new bearings on the crank (and dig the schmoo out of the crankcase). There''s a vane in the transmission that is fairly fragile which you can break if you try to shim up the engine to get the access cover plate off. When you''re figuring the number of paper shims that go under the jugs, start with 4 .008". They tell you to strap the jug with a piece of steel and torque down without the head, so you can measure the remaining space in the cylinder at TDC and measure how much of the head hangs down into the cylinder. As I recall, the difference is where I discovered a decimal point error in the manual. The bottom line is you don''t want the valves to strike the piston at TDC. It''s a simple engine, and I actually enjoyed pushing the button after the rebuild and hearing it fire in half a dozen turns. Not a big deal. KW

I have a ms reverse gear. excellent condition. recently gone through.
I recently replaced my MD2B with a FW cooled MD11D and the MS gear would''nt match up with the new engine.

Jack, if you are in St. Pete Fl. Bluewater marine can help you with just about anything you need. If you are rebuilding, brngs. gask. pistons. They can order. They are the only dealer in town. I rebuilt mine 4 years ago but I had Thompson Machine resleave the cyldrs. I even have a spare parts motor in garage.

If I can be of any help, don''t hesitate to ask.
