rebuilding propane locker

My LPG cylinder is steel and I would like to replace it with either aluminum or the plastic variety that has just appeared. However, the propane locker is only 14.5 in deep, too short for any of the cylinders I have found.

If anyone knows of a source of smaller cylinders please let me know.

But I suspect I will have to replace the propane locker, which is built into the port seat of the cockpit and protrudes into the lazarette. I haven't seen any replacements for sale, so I assume I would have to construct one from StarBoard or plywood and fiberglass.

Has anyone done this? Are there photos anywhere?

Thanks
Micheal

The 16# composite propane tanks are very reasonably priced, and I picked up two for my boat for less than $50 each. They're about 1' in diameter and 18" high. I'll be building a new propane locker for them this fall.

If you would be so kind, could you document the project with photos :)
I can wait until spring to do mine...

Will do, if I can remember to.. :) Planning on making the new locker out of 3mm plywood and fiberglass.

10 pound

Cylinders r available,15 1/4 inches high, 12 inch diameter. One thing to watch for with the composites is the neck fitting and valve being made of different materials.

I've seen large diameter PVC pipe used for some tank storage installations.

That's usually for the 1 lb. disposable tanks, not large refillable ones. :)

Propane Lockers

Michael,

I know that this is very late but I just saw your message concerning P-323 propane lockers and I am desperate to find lockers to install on my 323. Did you eliminate yours in favor of larger tanks and if so, are they still available by some chance. I am prepared to pay handsomely.

Thanks,

Jim
