Taking the ring off, a little liquid dishwashing soap, and heating up the boot plus some brute force was the solution. Ended up just laying it in the sun for a few hours and it got more pliable. And yes, Hubbel and Marinco are just slightly different in how the plug and ring connect to the receptacle. Already figured that out the hard way.
