Do we overdo electronics?

Just before leaving on my last cruise, I got hit by lightning which took out all my electronics including my chart plotter. I got the boat back in the water in time for the cruise, but not to replace the chart plotter. I used a cheapo Magellan I got free for test driving a Cadillac. After 500 miles, both offshore and coastal, clear, fog, and night, I found I really didn''t miss the chart plotter. I refound enjoyment in using a paper chart and plotting positions when needed. Do we allow the industry and the media to convince us we really need this stuff?

Do we overdo electronics?

I knew how to set a course and get a fix of my position based on either celestial or dead reckoning long before I bought a GPS with built-in charts. The GPS is just a time and effort saver, although it does help when it''s cloudy and beyond the sight of land.

Do we NEED it? No. Does it make sailing more pleasurable? That depends on how much you enjoy navigating the old fashioned way.
