Exhaust System leaks
I replaced the exhaust system on a older Catalina 30 with a Universal 25 diesel. I used bronze pipe from WM. I was told by one mechanic to put the pipe together dry as any lubricant or sealer would be destroyed by the heat anyway. I tightened it down with a 3' pipe wrench, it was tight. After a few weeks the pipe is loose again. Another mechanic said I should use Teflon.
The engine mounts were loose and the muffler was not bolted down.
I had them just screw down the muffler, but think the boards it is screwed to are rotten. Tightened down the engine but am now worried about engine alignment.
Put the pipe back together with Teflon.
What are my chances?
I guess the main question is: Should bronze exhaust fittings be put together dry or with a sealer or lubricant.
if so what, Teflon tape?
Plumbers putty or teflon tape would both work... Make sure you get the high-temperature version of plumbers putty if you're using it.
