What is this in my cockpit

I have two eyeletts atteched on the backrest on each side in my cockpit in way of middle of tiller. I am not sure what are these for and suspect they are meant for controlling the tiller somehow. Anyone to advise how important is it to have it how easy is it to use? I do have a good reliable autopilot that I use all the time.

Cool

Although they don't look very structural, they could have been used to lash the rudder when hove to. They certainly look like some sort of bimini or cover attach point as already pointed out.

I second the bungee cord to tiller attachment point...use to do that with my Mac.

Might have had a short bungee with a small line attached for fine adjustments as it does take some experimenting to get it balanced right...I could help balance the boat to hold course by changing where I sat also...by either moving for or aft I could help the bungee stay on course...Sort of..

Usu to bounce all over my boats....Tether and life jacket? what was that? shoot this was 30+ years ago..Teens are invincible just ask one..

I had a Tiller-Mate hooked up to similar eyelets. It is a bungie with a friction device that attaches to the tiller. Works for short breaks from the tiller.

The location is a bit odd in any case. A bit uncomfortable for anyone needing to sit in that spot. If an option I'd suggest relocating or install something inset below the surface.
