Active Captain !

ActiveCaptain:

A year or so back, I didn't have many nice things to say about activecaptain, I just didn't like it. It was very new and it didn't have a lot of information at that time. I didn't like the way it worked at all, and said so.

Well I am here to say my opinion has changed. There has been a lot of information added over the past year, lots of marina's and local knowledge. If you haven't look at it, in the past few months, I suggest you give the site another look. Well done.

I agree, and it should only get better. Have you visited MadMariner.com yet? A partner of AC.

Among other things its a great place to find boat ramps for those who trailer sail.

And one improvement appears to be that a change from FREE to a charge of about $20.00 per area will soon start....

I like the site too and have contributed many updates. As far as I can see, the charge is only for the mobile version and only for international charts where ActiveCaptain gets charged.

Ahhhh! No!!!

The newsletter was really poorly written and a few people have read it the same way. Accessing all of the data on the web site is free now. It will be free next month, next year, and for as long as I can type and take nourishment.

ActiveCaptain Mobile, the software that runs on Palm OS and Windows Mobile mobile phones used to cost $50. That included all 2,000+ NOAA charts. Instead, it's now being broken down so you can get just a single region of 200-300 charts for $20. But it's only for the software for the phone. We'll be doing something similar with an iPhone version too. It allows people who only cruise in a single area to get into the software for a lower price - something that we'd been asked for especially for sailors who don't need charts from the other coast, etc.

Thanks for putting this up, I think I had run by it before and was unimpressed but now it would seem it will be quite helpful in planning a trip up the St. Johns to Lake George...................

Xort-

From what Jeff wrote, that is the cost of the software that you need to run on your phone to access ActiveCaptain from the mobile platform—not a subscription fee. I'd imagine that newer versions would be available at a reduced "upgrade" price...

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
