New jib, reef questions.

After a great sail out on puget sound yesterday the foot of my jib came apart. It was an antique anyways, so it is time for a new sail. I have a tartan 30 with roller furling and would like some input on the proper set up for reefing. Does a foam luff work, and are there disadvantages. North touts their rope luff reefing system. Does anyone here have experience with it? I understand a reefed jib will never have the performance of a non-reefed smaller headsail, but my roller system has a dedicated track over the entire headstay so sail changes are difficult.
