Peter,
Most Cal''s have a fiberglass encapsulated keel assembly. There was one model about your vintage that was a bolt on.

Either way, an inspection of the bilge area should confirm which one you have. The bolt on keel is pretty straight forward. The encapsulated trapazoidal type is a fiberglasser''s dream. Lots of cutting and grinding. And the replacement would be a structural engineers nightmare. I have never heard of anyone doing anything but local repairs.

If it is a bolt on keel, check the Sailnet Ranger list archives. Several people have removed and rebedded the cast iron keels on Ranger 26''s (Same manufacturer - Jensen Marine). They described the procedures in detail and a couple even have pictures.

You can also get a lot of info from the Sailnet Cal List on this matter as a couple of listees have major projects on going.

Good Luck,

Peter,
As part of the Sailnet Lists, Sailnet maintains an FTP server for the lists. The Cal list is one of the most active lists (too active for some). Their ftp site has many scanned images of the original owners manuals, drawings and equipment. Try pointing your browser to ftp://ftp.sailnet.com/Cal

And rummage around, I think you will find what you need.

The fact that you did not see two rows of nuts, only the steel loop, would lead me to believe yours is encapsulated. Removal would not be prudent. There are major laminations at the keel root which would be involved. Also, this model Cal has a steel beam located athwartship under the forward bulkhead. It and the bulkhead itself have been subject to much rot/corrosion, necessitating major surgery. It is critical as the rigging loads are transferred to the hull by these members.

I own a 1969 Cal 2-30. Your keel is encapsulated. The ring you see was to lower in the lead ballast. It was then sealed in glass. You cannot cut off the keel and replace for less than the boat is worth. It is an impractical idea. They are great sailing boats, however, very fast, and seakindly.
