used gear since the hurricanes?

I was wondering if there would be a lot of used gear on the market since the hurricanes. I could use some self-tailing winches and they are usually still pretty expensive used. Does anyone know of any websites where used gear is sold? I have tried craigslist but it is not user friendly as you have to go to the particular city to look for something. I didn't know if there was a salvage or insurance site where I could look...

There will be a flood of stuff on e-bay; after the looters get through with the boats that are not salvaged. Unfortunately there is just not enough police services to protect all of the boats that were sent aground.

I’ve wanted self tailing winches for years. Self tailing just isn’t worth the price it brings yet . . . for me anyway. I’m on the “Ebay Email Alert” for winches but nothing yet. I thought there would be stuff after Katrina but hardly anything ever materialized. It looks like many more sailboats met their demise in Ike. We’ll see.

I am sorry for the loss to so many people. I don't want to sound like a vulture.

I am looking for self-tailers on Ebay but prices they command just aren't very attractive. In fact Defender has a nice sale on new Lewmar 40s ST. Oh, wait - someone mentioned it already.

I am sure there are a lot more buyers than sellers for decent winches.

Some years ago I bought a replacement pair of winches from Minney's Yacht Surplus. I see they now are selling on ebay, but at the moment the only winches they have are non S/T.

They sell all kinds of equipment from salvaged boats. Send them an email and tell them what you are looking for.

Who knows?

Put me down for a pair of self-tailers as well
