Custom Battens

Can a sail maker fit a set of battens from a sail I bring in? I'm buying it used but the longer battens are almost 8 feet long. A real pain to ship.

Not sure that I understand your shipping problem in that if the sailmaker supplies you with new battens you will have to pay for the shipping at least one way and the battens on top of it.

But yes, a sailmaker can make new battens from the sail.

I'm guessing he means can the sail loft use their own battens while they are doing whatever work needs to be done. If that is the case, I guess it would depend on the loft. Another route would be to use someone local, so you can drive the sails over and not ship them. Annapolis isn't too far and obviously has a number of lofts. Another option closer to home would be Potomac Sailmakers in Alexandria, VA.

Sorry for not being more specific. The first post didn't give much info.

I'm buying a set of used pentex sails from a guy in washington state. He's shipping them to me, and a regular john doe walks into UPS with something 8' long looking to ship it cross country. They'll charge him a fortune, so I was going to try and help him out a bit by seeing what I could find locally.

No problem then, any sailmaker should be able to make what ever battens you need from the sail alone.
