Adding a Deck Hatch

Hi all. I am getting ready to add another deck hatch to my Cat 30. Being an older model it has only one small opening hatch in the cabin and the larger one forward at the v-berth. Some newer models docked near mine have up to two additional small opening hatches (10" x 10") in the cabin. Well, I have bought one and I am going to install it over the head. My question is this: Can I safely install it with the hinge-side facing aft? With it opening toward the front there would be a significant increase in airflow, especially when docked or anchored. I realize that it might be vulnerable while under way, so I would probably close it.

Any thoughts or prior experience with this issue?

Yes, you can install it... but remember to remove the core material for at least 1/2-3/4" around the edge of the hatch cutout and to drill the fastener holes oversized and pot them with thickened epoxy.

As for whether it should open aft, with the hinges forward, or open forward with the hinges aft... it depends... If it was aft-opening, it would tend to act to pull air from the boat, and that is probably better than bringing air into the boat, considering that it is located in the head compartment.

Also, that would be safer if the deck gets swept by green water.

Ask yourself, do you really want air coming through the hatch and spreading whatever odors may be lingering in the head compartment around the rest of the boat???

Very good point SD, I don't need to "savor" the head odors.
