Cost of Max-Prop service and reindexing

I want to get my Max-Prop reindexed and serviced. I have a quote of $800-$1400 ? Is that reasonable?

Thanks,
Stefan

Yes, a new one could cost $5000. What size is yours?

wondering what the indexing and service intails, If its just setting the pitch, greasing it and cleaning it up, thats something you can do yourself.
I've pulled mine apart whenever I do a bottom job, clean it and put the pieces back together, its really a simple thing to do if you've got a manual.

I think I only paid for 1.5 hours of labor at CSR for mine - well below $800. Nothing really to them actually - couple allen set screws undone to seperate the halves, using a chart, mark the points / indexes - set halves back in at required points, re-install and grease.

Jody:

Did the prop adjustment help with your engine smoking/overheating problem?

It did actually - it now only smokes when only at beyond norm operating rpms (ie heavy throttle)...It does take longer now to go forward but reverse is instantaneous and I really do not have to increase throttle to much to engage. Overheating - not even an issue now either. All in all - a success. That was a good suggestion - thanks much.

Is there a place online to verify what your prop should be at? I am wondering of my max prop is pitched to Low? it does not seem to propel me at max WL speed at max throttle. so i am wondering if it is pitched correct. I know what the PO had the prop set to etc.

If you have the two blade like I do:

http://preview.tinyurl.com/5ygy7r

the three:

PYI Inc. Max-Prop PSS Shaft Seal Seaview Radar Mounts R&D

Scroll to the chart as that is what the gents at CSR used on mine and it was woefully off (as I watched the entire time)...

They also stated the reps there will answer questions fairly timely on the phone.

When I spoke to the folks at max-prop the first time, they instructed me to set the prop pitch to the point where it would stall the motor about 200 RPM less than max for the motor.
I have a Perkins 4-108 new style with a max rpm at 3600 rpm..after pitching 3 different times, we got it to the point where the motor would rev no higher than 3400 rpm..
It works great in forward and reverse............
If you can get a manual, it goes into detail on how to align the markings for the right pitch...
Its best to do it out of the water, as dropping something is a drag while under the boat, but it has been done.. I once spoke to someone that had changed his pitch in the water by backing the boat up to the shallows and putting down a white sheet under the back in case he dropped something.
