NADA vs ASKING PRICE

Someone help me out on this one. Ive been searching for an outboard for my boat for a while now and it seems that everyone I find used is usually double what NADA quotes for regular retail. If someone wanted to buy my truck the price would be relevant to what NADA says its worth. Seems not to be the case with outboards I'm finding.

I know that some will say buy a new one, but my budget is tight and I'm trying to outfit my boat with what I can afford now and upgrading what I can as years pass.

Found this one locally and they would be willing to let me make payments @ $100 a week till its paid off. Good deal?

8hp Evinrude, 30hp Johnson, 50hp Johnson

The 8hp one for $650, BTW my neighbor is a boat mech and we will rebuild her to just like new. Thanks for your input

Everything is negotiable. Check Craigslist and the classifieds, but if the engine is from a dealer and he will WARRANTY IT, that's going to be worth something extra.

IF it is in GOOD shape the 8hp is a much better motor than anything currently made in that size range

I would not want anything any bigger on a 22' boat as a 6HP jony/rude would be perfect

I will say in a saltwater location the motors tend to be a littel more used-up compared to a freshwater location

If a dirty bottom slows you down what do you think it does to your boat

The motor looks in great shape and they say that it starts first pull every time. I will have my mechanic check it out and if it looks good im going to go for it.

Though about what size to get for my boat. I live in New Smyrna Beach and our inlet (Ponce Inlet) has a very strong tidal pull. My transom is rated for a 15HP max so I think the 8hp will work just fine.

Thanks for the input guys and happy sailing.

Oh the engine is from a dealer and more then likely the place that I will be keeping my boat so im sure that they wont try to screw me over~

650 for a 8hp is a pretty fair price based on what I've seen in my area.

BTW, my buddy used my 2.5 hp for a season on his Catalina 22, no problems - maxed out at 5 kts through the water.

I run the inlet all the time and as long as you have the tide flow right there is no problem. I have a 26 with a 15hp Honda. If the flow is against you and you have fleet boats running thru at the same time, it can get pretty hairy. If the price difference isn't that much you may want to opt for the 15. Better more power that less at that inlet. Heavy shoaling and a narrow channel.
