International Warranty questions

I'm curious to know how those ocean going sailboat make warranty claims on electronics that goes south. My friend ordered a Raymarine C70/Radome pack from WM and has just about completed the installation when the C70 failed to startup. It was tested working the week before. As there is a local Raymarine office here, my friend asked if he could have the C70 set fixed here. However, answer was no. It should be returned to place of purchase for warranty claim. Forunately, the local Raymarine office will make this one exception to fix his set. My question is what happen if you sail to far away place and your Raymarine fails. Do you have to send your equipment back to States to get it fixed? Or should the local manufacturer office be able to cover your warranty ?

Each manufacturer is different, but does put the warranty in writing (although usually the print is very small in order to save ink) - it pays to look at the warranty very closely. Often enough I get a "worldwide warranty" in the USA which encompasses the whole world to the American Manufacturer - all 50 states and everything else is at the purchaser's cost (shipping to dealer or factory and paying for postage both ways).

Raymarine's policies are pretty good and documented here, according to the international warranty the local service agent is the contact point, unless not all the conditions are met.

Zanshin, thanks. looks like future warranty claim has to go back to WM 1st.

Omatako will become famous soon enough
I don't know about Raymarine but I had a wind instrument from Simrad (Navico) installed in San Diego and it had packed up by the time I reached New Zealand (3 months).

When I talked to the local agents, they took the display into their facility, messed about with it for a month then gave it back with the (verbal) admission that it couldn't be fixed and would be replaced under warranty.

Six months later they reverted with the report that they would not be replacing it under warranty and that if I wanted to pursue the matter, I needed to return the instrument to the supplier in San Diego. Yeah right!!

I've just traded it in on a Raymarine unit under their special promotion here in New Zealand. So Simrad are not that "rad", they'll never see another dollar from me.

For the record they also make/market Navman (also junk) and B&G which is like 4 times the cost of Raymarine.

I wouldn't want to be their marketing director
