Knotmeter testing and compass gasket

A couple of quick questions..
My 1982 starwind 22 has a needle style knotmeter that is not working..
When i flick the thru hull with my finger it spins fine..
the wires are sealed inside the end of the transmitter...
Should I stick a voltmeter into the wires ???
Any proper order that i should test it in.??
I guess it could be the run of wire from bow to stern..

also, I bought a replacement 4" compass at westmarine for a great price...
there was no gasket though..
what would you recommend, something more foamy or something more rubbery...
is there a secret where to get it ??

Thanks for your help,
Joey

What make/model knot meter is it? Don't break the insulation on the wires... that's usually a big mistake on marine equipment.

As for the compass, see if you can find some 2-3mm neoprene.

BTW, you really should read the post in my signature... it will help you get the most out of your time on sailnet.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
