Winter Storage... Ahhhh!

I am new to sailboat ownership and was shocked at the price to store a boat for the winter. Average prices on the Northshore of Long Island seem to be around 45 dollars/foot. Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative that doesn't involve storing it in my backyard (I don't have a yard)?

It is a 36 foot sailboat that I would be willing to keep anywhere on the northshore of Long Island between NYC and Northport.

Look around, and you may be able to find as low as $30 a foot, but this late in the season, there aren't going to be many yards with space available, so you might not have much choice on rates.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Willis may be the best price they were much cheeper on my work than all the other yards in the area

But you will have to check each yards contract as many require mast steping which raises the total even higher

I would not wait to long as many of the smaller places are full

If a dirty bottom slows you down what do you think it does to your boat

Try Viking Boat Yard, Verplank, NY, on the Hudson. $33/ft.

Watch...

Watch all the "menu" items carefully. the yard with the cheap Sq. ft price may have significantly higher prices on other "menu" items like boat stand rental, pressure washing, mast stepping / un-stepping on and on ....

Here in Maine when all is said and done you can barely squeeze $150.00 between all the yards even though some appear to have much cheaper Sq. Ft prices...

Also consider the level of service and their reputation. this to me is my #1 priority. I can call Alan and tell him I want to go in the water next Tuesday and he'll say "what time" and I'll say 12:00 and my boat is in the slings with the keel getting wet a 12:00 sharp!! I'd gladly pay more for service than nickle and diming my way to a Sq. Ft price..

P.S. My boat came out Saturday October 11th and it was completely shrink wrapped by 10:00 am on Tuesday October 14th only because Monday was too windy for shrink wrapping...

I'd gladly pay more for service like this but I don't have too....

Glen Cove Marina (used to be Jude Thaddeus) charges $44/ft with a 10% discount if paid in full before 10/31. That's as cheap as I've been able to find. College Point YC in Queens (still technically the north shore) used to be cheaper, even for non-members, but they have NO services. You can try them if you're so inclined. Good luck.

welcome to boat ownership. wait til you get the spring yard bill!

$45/foot is decent price compared to connecticut. but as others indicate - check for TOTAL COST OF STORAGE - mast step/unstep, mast storage, poppet charges (some yards charge $20-30 per poppet and you'll need 7-9 poppets), winter cover, winterization, etc.

Did you also think about your cost for spring commissioning too? or will you do your own bottom painting and mechanical work? Budget that as well for the springtime - if the yard will do the work - get ready for some big numbers.

rule #1 in boat ownership - its not cheap
rule #2 - read rule #1.

Rick
