Another Smoke Thread (2gm20) (16 HP)

I have a bit of grey/white smoke coming out my exaust. Ive checked oil levels, coolent levels, both are fine. I put 14 hours on the motor last weekend (Avg rpm was 2800, I try to keep it there as much as possible), and burnt 6 gallons of fuel (no excessive fuel burn).

At the beginning of a trip it starts out as a bit of black, through out the trip there is grey/white smoke, all the way till I shut the motor off at my destination.

Any idea what causing this? BTW, the motor has 638 hours, and its a 1988 Hunter.

Thanks~

It's normal

There is always going to be some smoke out of the back of the exhaust. No engine is 100% effiecient and burns all fuel into CO2 and H20 vapor.

If we are talking whisps of white, light grey smoke mixed in with good water flow out of the back and normal engine temps, I'd say everything is fine. The fact that you motored for 14 h continuous and burned 6 gallons of fuel at 2800 RPM is the key here.

A short time of whisps of black smoke in the beginning is also fine as long as it clears up in a matter of minutes and/or is not billowing out.

Well, it was 7 hours each way. I did tow another boat half the way back. The smoke is whisps, not billowing. Thanks for the help.

I agree, it sounds normal. You can look in the manual for the service interval in your injectors and your valve adjustment. You may be getting near your service interval, and may be creating a little more smoke than a few hundred hours earlier.

You might could check your air filter if the smoke is new. Black/blue and steam are bad, anything else okay as long as it's not billowing.
