mast is down. rented a towable manlift from Sunbelt rentals. It took a few hours, but 2 of us got it down without damaging our boat or anyone else's. we labeled everyting as we disassembled it. I brought tons of carpet strips to wrap it all up for transportation, and used 2 rolls of duct tape to keep it all from rattling. the thing that caused us the most difficulty was the roller furling, which was longer than the mast, so it got in the way a lot. we lifted it from the lift basket with a rope holding the mast just below the spreaders.
towable lift was only 175 for the day. Sunbelt was fantastic to deal with in Countryside, IL, a small corner of Chicago. I think they're nationwide.
i recommen d having a third person on hand if you're going to do ti this way. it would take a hell of a lot less time than having only 2.
thanks again for all your kind suggestions.
