Our New Old Boat

So I started this thread in the "General Discussion" forum, but I think it fits better here.

Me and My girlfriend bought a 1979 Bristol 22 in August. She's not alot to look at right now... she's been sitting in the marina for about 10 years, but she's got potential. She's structurally sound but needs alot of work. So far we've made some progress with the cabin and galley, as well as removing the crazy amount of bottom paint on the boat.

We are on a budget so we are doing all the work ourselves. This is an upgrade from the Chrysler 20 we had. We'd like to make it as nice as possible so we'll be taking our time and adding the extras as we go. Right now the goal is just to get her sailing.

Congratulations and good luck!

I do not use facebook, could not look at the pic.
I am a bit ahead of you on the same path. Makes me feel better that I am no the only crazy person fixin' and sailing small old boad.

Waiting for details/progress reports and possibly to see the results in person next season (either you sail north to Raritan Bay, or me going south)

I'm with a lot of people on that, would like to see the pics, but don't want to join anything to do so.
There are a few options on line that allow viewing without joining, picassa, and photobucket for a couple. Photo bucket seems to allow posting each photo in a message (embedding it I guss), not sure if google/picassa allow that or not but they do allow linking to them

Hope your bottom paint removal went well, I got extremely lucky on the Ariel, had a few layers of paint on it, started to sand then noticed a few chips coming off, so used a hand scraper (single edge razor blade type!) and started poking at it, ended up getting the whole side scraped to gell coat in about 3 hours. I'm assuming the first coat was put on without proper prep because it came off so easily.

One of the reasons I like old boats is because there are generally a few different repairs that have been done on them, and you get first hand knowledge of what does and doesn't work long term.

Ken.

Ok, I'm working on trying to put my photos up on a site that doesn't require you being a member to see them.

I actually have not been lucky with the bottom paint removal so far. I tried just scraping and sanding (with an orbital power sander) and that was slow goings. I'm now switching between a power washer and using the interlux interstrip. It works ok but it's still gross and slow... oh well! nothing a little elbow grease won't fix.

Vadimgo, I was hoping to do some cruising up that way this summer. Assuming all goes to plan and the boat is up for it. I'd be great to see you boat as well. I just checking out your pictures.

Chad-

Photobucket.com and flickr.com both allow public viewing of photos... accounts are free on both. If you're on a PC... get Picasa and you can use it to post your photos to picasaweb.com It's free from Google...

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Ok, I've created a photobucket page for photos. So that should work better.

Merc2dogs, My bottom paint removal has not gone as well as yours... at all. I'm having a rough time with it so far. I'm using interlux interstrip and it's slow goings.

Vadimgo, I was hopeful about making my way up to the Raritan this upcoming summer, as long as everything goes to plan with the boat. I was just checking out your photos. The boat looks great!

Here's some links for the photos. I'll be updating these as we make more progress. They're not in chronological order, but I'm sure you can tell what came first.
