Anyone tried Prop-Shield (lanolin grease) ? Any feedback ?

I've used hard insulator wax with good results. I would think grease would be short-lived on a prop. It's surprising how much friction there is from water & sediment on a prop. I guess it all depends on how much you motor vs. sail.

Re insulator wax - do you mean the Collonite Insulator Wax they use for power line insulators? Do you sail in salt or fresh water? The insulator wax sounds like an interesting option.

Re lanolin - i looked into that last year- input from others seem to indicate that the grease is going to fly off once the prop spins up - so its a near term solution.

That's the very stuff. I'm a freshwater sailor. Back in the 90's we were having a terrible time with zebra mussels and I had a 24 foot yawl that had an outboard well thet didn't allow the motor to swing out of the water. The insulator wax worked to keep the slime and mussels off (they'd get started, but after a bit of sailing or motoring they'd slough off). A little goes a long way - I mostly use it now on the depth transducer and the knotmeter paddles.

Just finish coating my prop with Proshield yesterday. Installing to shaft today. We'll know if it'll work in 3 weeks time.
I use an industrial heat gun (like a hair dryer) to warm up the prop before coating. Is that good enough ?

A heat gun is suitable for application Method A. Please note if the red colour is no longer visible to the naked eye Propshield will still remain active for a very long time. Please refer to the instructions for details on Shedding.

Sad but true. I've used it for two seasons in Rhode Island/Connecticut coastal waters. The first year I had a major barnacle crop on my Max Prop, strut and shaft. I took great pains with application in the second season, assuming I might have done something wrong in the first application. After two months in the water the prop is barely recognizable under the thick layers of barnacle growth. I'm afraid Prop-Shield is just another example of the snake-oil syndrome. At $80 a jar, this is my last attempt with this stuff.

Dear rersk, we are sad to hear that you didn't get the desired performance from our product. There can be reasons Propshield is rendered ineffective the main one being that if the propeller is not used under power at full speed for an hour or more at least once every two months then encrustation may become a problem. If you have experienced two poor seasons we suggest increasing the usage of your propeller at full power as it may be that you are in a particulary virilant area for encrustations.

As with all antifouls Propshield works by using the flow of water over the propeller when it is under power although in some cases fast flowing water without power may also aid performance.
