This shows a comparison of the two Depco Engine paints.

The Depco #3601 Ford Blue is a rich, bold, saturated blue. The Depco #3608 GM Blue is a bit more of a cyan and I think the closer to the Perkins color (at least my Perkins).

Perkins 4-108

I have a 1985 Perkins 4-108 which I repainted about 10 years ago. I'm getting ready to do it again and may use the blue paint that was closer to the original color. What I did in the past was to wire brush and sand it as much possible, then applied a degreasing spray purchased at a auto parts store and then used a high temperature paint from a spray can. Not sure it was neccessary to go with the high temperature rating, but it sure has done well over the years. Do you know the temperature rating of the paint you're using?

Primer

Also did you use a primer? I did not when I did it previously.

Transmission filler cap

Your tranny's filler cap may have a pinhole in its side for breathing. Don't let paint clog it.

Thanks, I'll double check. I have a Borg Warner velvet drive which only has a dip stick that doubles as a filler tube so I don't think there is a breather hole.

I painted my Perkins with Tremclad medium blue (very close to Perkins blue) 13 years ago. I also painted my bilges with Tremclad white. scrubbed everything with a 3M scrubbie and used no primer. I will never use anyhting else. It is cheap and impervious to any of the fluids you will find in the average bilge or engine compartment. Photosand other maintenance tips on my site at

The link may get cut by moderator but I see no commercial gain.
