what can i use to remove paint without harming gelcoat

I've had good luck with this stuff:

Ready Strip paint stripper and varnish remover

It removes up to 7 layers of paint or varnish and is environmentally friendly. It won't harm gelcoat. They use this on the White House when they remodel. My local hardware store carries it so it's not hard to find.

Easy off oven cleaner also works fairly well, if you're just doing a small bit... otherwise, use a fiberglass safe paint stripper.

I recently used INTERLUX Interstrip 299E Fiberglass Paint Stripper on my dinghy rails and it worked well though it was far less powerful than old fashioned strippers for wood only and much more expensive. WEST MARINE Safety Pro Stripper and PETTIT Bio Blast Paint Stripper are, I think, gel types advertised safe for gelcoat. Obviously these products are readily available at marine supply houses.
