To Paint bottom or not?

I have a 2000 catalina 18 which has never had the bottom painted, last year it was in the lake all season (May-Oct). When I pulled it out I was able to get it cleaned pretty good. I would like any info on whether to paint the bottom and if so what should I use. I would prefer not to paint but do want to leave it in the water all season, but I can pull it weekly if needed to clean. I''m new at this and need to know if it is harmful to the gelcoat to leave it unpainted. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated
