Weather receiver?

For a boat that I expect to be doing some serious cruising in, what would you guys & gals recommend as far as weather receiving gear and for email etc on the boat.

I've looked into sat phone, and it still seems a little pricey when I can just use a cell when near the coast, but it would be nice to have email etc away from shore.

or what about SSB radio?
