Need a tranny rebuilt

I'm looking for references on a reputable marine transmission rebuild shop in the Connecticut/Long Island Sound area to rebuild my Herth HBW 50 (non-"V-drive"). I smoked and slipped coming up the Housatonic in November, and it's now out of the boat looking for service.

Hurth HBW 50 & Things Going "Clunka-Clunka" in the Night...

A couple of weeks ago, we went out for a nice evening sail after work. We got out into Commencement Bay, put up the sails and killed the engine. It was a really nice evening - about 60 degrees and 10 knots of wind, no chop.

I thought it was perfect until I started hearing this "clunka-clunka" sound coming from down below. I opend up the engine compartment, and thought the noise was coming from my Hurth transmission (the shaft was rotating, and the sound was coming from that area). It really bothered me, so I canceled the sail, and sailed back to my marina on the Thea Foss Waterway (aka City Waterway, aka "Shitty Waterway" - read on).

To make a long story short, I learned all about the Hurth HBW 50, and talked to a bunch of people who install them. The transmission appeared to be ok (lots of nice, clear red ATF) - so I rented a wetsuit, and went for a swim in the waterway. Good news was, it was not the transmission, nor the cutlass bearing - but rather my zincs. One had fallen off, and the other was so loose that it slid down the shaft, and was about to fall off (thus making the clunka-clunka sound). The sound went back up the shaft, into the engine compartment, etc.

My point is this - those of you with the Hurth HBW 50, and the Universal M25 need to be aware that the transmission is actually a little too small for that engine (running 21 hp at 2000 RPM, supposed to max at 2300 RPM). The guys at the transmission places I spoke to told me that I should not press it above 1700 RPM when crusiing long distances under power.

Has anyone else had problems with their transmission, or have info on this subject? Also - should I be putting my transmission in reverse once under sail? The Hurth guys said yes - any of you know otherwise?
So are you certain that it is the friction plates?
It is not hard to split the case and remove them and replace with new ones, and put the case back together.

FYI, my Hurth HBW50 is being pushed by a Universal M4-30 that kicks around 25hp at cruising rev's between 2,600 and 3,200. No issues on the tranny since it's installation in 1993.

I run the same tranny on my boat. When sailing it MUST be in neutral to free spin or in REVERSE to lock it down.

These boxes were designed for 30HP motors so your 21HP is fine.

Just remember to change the oil every 350h or every 12 months.

Note: ZF/Hurth have a de-rating factor for their transmissions if it is a 1, 2 or 3 cylinder engine!!

@r.furborough you are quite correct. For @captdave57 his motor is rated 21HP @ 3200 RPM, but maximum safe RPM for that motor is 3000. (See more here http://www.marinedieseldirect.com/un...ications.html).

The derating factors for the ZF Hurth HBW50 if I recall are:
1 cyl - 2.1
2 cyl - 1.5
3 cyl - 1.2
4 cyl - 1

Therefore max safe power input to the HBW50 gearbox from a three cylinder engine will be 30HP/1.2 = 25HP which is higher than the cruising power output of @captdave57's motor which I guess to be around 17HP. (The cruising RPM is the one that matters)

Call me technical but I want to know what and how things cook in my boat!
