Red face Fuel tank corrosion

I'm a new member to the Sail net forum, and I'm hoping that someone out there can help me with my question.

My husband and I have a 1977 Endeavour 37, and last fall we pulled all of the tankage for cleaning and the installation of sending units along with all new water and fuel lines. We found that the water tank was severely corroded on the inside, and the previous owners had "creamed" the interior of the tank to slow it's progress, yuck, what a mess. Needless to say we have ordered a new water tank from the Florida Marine Tank Company, who made the original when the boat was built. The outside of the water tank has an epoxy coating on it, and we were told this was to help prevent corrosion.

When I cleaned the fuel tank, the interior of the tank looked pretty good, a little slimy, but not as bad as we thought. However, the exterior of the fuel tank does not have an "epoxy" coating on it and is showing some pitting from the corrosion.

My question is this, I want to "epoxy" the exterior of the fuel tank before we put the tankage back in, but I have no idea what type of epoxy coating to use. There are several types out there, and i just don't know what to use , any help on this matter would be a real big help!!!!

make sure you get this right. poor epoxy coating can trap moisture between the tank & the coating making things worse!

go to Progressive Epoxy Polymers and Resins - Home Page Pittsfield, NH and take a look around. It's a diffucult site to surf but full of good info. He has a bunch of different epoxies for all types of applications. He will answer your questions, so ask him what he recommends.

Good luck.
