Repost: How to Put New Name ON Stern .. paint problem

I thought about this and then I thought .. I am approaching
this wrong..

For you who have had to :: How did you put the new boat name
and hailing port on your stern? How did you get the old name off?
Was the old name painted on? Any thoughts on what to do if the
surface is Awlgrip paint with painted on name/port?

If it's painted on more than likely you'll need to get the transom re-shot with Awlgrip...

As for the new lettering, one word: Vinyl

Call your nearest sign shop or Boat US graphics for the new lettering.

Yep, vinyl. You can find sources all over the net, including here on Sailnet.

Citrus based paint remover got the old painted-on name off for us. Just left a shadow where it protected the hull from oxidation over the years.

I put new vinyl on the boat last year - very easy, but worth reading up on some tricks first. Helps to mark the hull with tape position points first. Make sure the surface is clean. Half way through, I learned about the standard trick of spraying a little water on the hull first, and then lightly laying the decal on that. This allowed me to precisely position the decal before pressing it down with a squeegee. The inevitable little bubbles vanished over time, as promised. Check the procedure with the company supplying the decals, if not installed professionally.

Hair dryer to get up the vinyl and Goof Off to remove any residue.
