What is the best way to store sails for the winter? Is there anything wrong with folding the headsail or does a sail used on a roller furling need to be rolled for storage?

If we''re talking about dacron sails....I fold mine. If you have some of the new exotic materials, I really don''t know what''s recommended, but a sailmaker will know.

Jim is right. Folding your Dacron sails for winter storage is fine. Additionally, modern laminates, like Contender ACL and Bainbridge Diax can also be folded for winter storage. If a sail is being stored for longer than one season, we recommend refolding the sail along different fold lines periodically or rolling it if you have the space. The most important consideration for any sail storage is to make sure the sail is completely dry when you bag it and stored in a low humidity storage environment.

I generally roll my sails when storing them for long periods of time as the crimps at the folds take a set and shorten the life of the sail. I try to store them in a cool dry location. I also make sure that they are well protected from light as nothing shortens the life of a sail like UV exposure.
