Rebedding Mahogany Toe Rail & Rub Rail

I have decided toe place the 48 year old toe and rub rails on my Shark with Mahogany. When I am putting them on, I am unsure whether I need to seal with butyl tape the entire length on the rail (I hope not) or just seal each individual hole where the hardware goes through the fierglass?

It may be easier to go to an aluminum toe rail system, but I want to restore the boat as closely as possible to original, so that is the reason for goingwith the Mahogany.

You probably want to seal the entire backside of the rail, espeically if you live anywhere the temps drop below freezing, as any water trapped behind the rail that freezes can cause a problem.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Plus, if you ever decide to varnish them the moisture coming under and up through the wood will lift off the varnish in a month or two. That's why mine are Cetol'ed

I intend to use Cetol rather than Varnish.

SO, I guess I will have to seal the rails. Oh well, 24 feet of toe rail, seal both edges, times two rail = 96 feet of butyl taping.Oh yeah, have to do the rub rail as well, so 192 feet to tape. Wow, sounds like fun!
