packing material??

I have a Trojan F 32 that is going to need new packing. From what I understand, there are two kinds. Is anyone aware of the kind I should get

The old traditional waxed packing works well if properly placed. Cut at least two, three if they'll fit, rings of packing by fitting the material around an exposed section of your shaft. Cut the ends at a diagonal so they overlap. When placking these rings inside the packing nut; adjust each added ring so that its cut does not align with the earlier placed ring. Most suggest that the packing is properly compressed if the stuffing box will have an occassional drip when the engine is running warmed up in gear. If you can not hold your hand to the stuffing box while running because it's too hot than you have over tightened it. There will be a big range of acceptable between an occassional drip and to tight-too hot. The newer stuffing is teflon. It's more expensive, but it works very well. The teflon strip that I used once was applied in a continuous strip around the shaft like a spring. The teflon will accomodate a seal with less space, but there's nothing wrong with the "old stuff". Be sure to pick out the old stuffing to make enough room for a good filling of new material. It can often be pryied out with a small screwdriver. I tie a piece of rag around the shaft to shove aft while I'm fitting the stuffing, Expect a little water to be rushing in during your work, but no worries.'take care and joy, Aythya crew

the gore gto is supposedly the best traditional type stuffing. i just put the west marine gtu stuff. it does have the gore fibers but it has other things as well, i dont know if it will be too different in the long run as i just out it in. it takes about an hour your first time, and yes water comes in, my boat took on about 5 gallons or so while doing it.
