shaft log hose
I have a 1986 Catalina 34 - hull no. 13. I need to replace the shaft log hose.
can this be done with the boat in the water, or does the boat need to be hauled out?

Sailing dog - sorry about posting on the wrong topic - I now have my first mate posting this time.

Is it physically possible? maybe, under all the right circumstances

Would I attempt it under any circumstance other than a dire emergency? no

If it needs replacing - pull her and do it.

Mine is being done now and requires the engine to be pulled!

I would recommend hauling the boat. :) The problem is that to remove the shaft log hose and replace it—you have to disconnect the propshaft at some point, so you can pull the old hose off and put the new one on. If you have a problem at that point... you don't have the time to solve it if the boat is in the water, since water will most likely be pouring into the boat at that point. :)

Although i wouldn't recommend it, I've heard of people diving under the boat and putting plumber's putty or a wax seal temprarily around the shaft while doing such repairs in the water, but have never seen it first hand. I need to replace the hose on mine, but I'm going to wait until I haul for bottom paint later this year to do the swap. Personally, I would be very worried making this repair in the water and don't recomend it.

I've done this twice. We remove the coupling, slide the shaft back, then dive under and tap rags in around the shaft. We then remove the hose and packing and slip the new hose and packing into place. Then reverse the order. You would be amazed at how little water comes in.

And I'd think one would be equally amazed at how much water comes in if this all goes south half way through....

That's a pretty nervy move... I'd haul the boat myself. Not too fond of that 'sinking feeling'.;)
