Rebeding Chainplates/depth Sounder Questions. Thanks

Hello: my sailiboat has water stains on the bulkheads and so I need to rebed my chainplates. What do I use to rebed them? Also: I need a depth finder. Someone on craigslist has a GAMEFISHER DEPTH LOCATOR for $25.00. He says it doesn't take a transducer? Does this sound right? Did they ever make a model that just shoots the signal through the bottom of the unit itself? Thank you. Stephen

Check the bulkheads for rot before doing anything else. If the bulkheads are rotten, you'll need to replace them or repair them. DO NOT repair them by injecting epoxy.

Thanks, but what do I use to bed the chainplates? Silicone? or what? Thanks, Stephen

I'd use butyl tape, which you can buy at most glass repair shops.

Try to avoid using silicone on anything that you may want to paint later - it sheds paint like water even when it looks like there is nothing there.

And getting rid of the residue left behind by silicone is close to impossible, making the chances of getting stuff to stick there again almost ZERO.

Aside from bedding certain types of glazing, the underside of plates and cups and the tips of cotter pins, SILICONE has no place on a boat.
