Battery Charger Wiring ?

Hello,

This may be a dumb question but I'm asking anyway.

Is it best practice to wire up a battery charger so that the batteries can be charged even while switched "Off"? or should you wire it so that they need to be on to take the charge?

In other words, Should the charger be wired directly to the batteries or through the distribution switches?
