Just to follow up with the outcome of this incase any body else looks this thread up for a similar problem in the future...Took the boat out last weekend and while my gf was at the helm I had my head stuck behind the engine by the stuffing box. I kept playing with the packing nut and re adjusting it...then taking it all the way off again, moving it around and then re-tightening it. Eventually it started to work! I started noticing small drips and moisture coming from between the shaft and the packing nut letting me know the shaft was getting the proper moisture. It still got a little warm as I only had about 3 drips per minute so next time down I am going to ease it off a little more till I get around 5-10 drips per minute and then monitor the temp by hand.

So I think it was just a matter of having the stuff setteling in plus me playing around with it till eventually I got it. One more little piece of maintenance I can say I now know how to do - largely in part by everyone on this forum and especially MainSail with his awesome pictorials. - You should really make that webpage into a book by the way!

Not sure if anyone is still following this, but I have a question for anyone who may be... I repacked my stuffing box this winter while on the hard (my first time) using WPT GTU Gore packing material. When running under power, the packing nut feels hot...not too hot to touch, but hot. Typically when under power, I get a 5-10 second drip. Should it feel cool to touch? I am assuming that if I can touch the packing nut, it is not going to be hot enough to damage the shaft.

Is the shaft hot?

Can you feel the shaft and see if that is hot? That is a better indicator. With a helper, run the motor for a few minutes under load, i.e. shaft turning at mid range rpm. Put the motor in neutral to stop the shaft spinning and touch it near the packing nut. If it is "hot" then you are creating friction on the shaft. Whether or not it is causing scoring of the shaft can only be determined by pulling back the packing nut and looking at the shaft.

I just have traditional flax, not Gore, but mine doesn't get hot at all. I could see if it were juts a bit warm.. but if it's hot, I would loosen it 1/4 turn or so, and try motoring for 20 minutes to see if there is a difference. It sounds like you have lots of water flow / dripping, so I am surprised it feels hot.

I may have tightened it down too much, but I simply tightened until the water stopped when I splashed this spring. The puzzling part is I am getting the drip and the hot temp...to give an idea of the temperature, think metal stove top when the oven is on. I will try your suggestions and see what happens. Thanks.

Check that they packing nut is square to the shaft and the shaft is centered in it. You may be "scraping" the shaft with the nut if the nut is not centered around the shaft.
