Winchmate conversion for Barient 28s?

I have non- self tailing barient 28s as my primary winches, and would like to have self-tailing winches. there is a conversion by winchmate, which appears to be a complete addition of machined parts to convert my winches (which are 34 years old, but no problems so far). The winchmate conversions are about $600 per winch. Has anyone used these, are they effective, and is this silly, compared to buying new winches? I don't know what a modern equivalent of barient 28s would be. Thanks, Mike Graham,
