Any caulk is better than NO caulk
As i keep fixing stuff on my current 28 year old J24 i keep thanking the PO for being a caulking freak 
He may have been a messy caulking freak  who did not always use the right caulk BUT every piece of hardware i dread pulling off because its going to open a Pandora's box of wet core is sealed with something and the balsa looks brand new 
I am sure i will run into something over the next few years but so far so good
