Rudder post lubrication

I removed the rudder from my Pearson P30 in February to replace the prop shaft and rudder cap. When I reinstalled the rudder last weekend it was very difficult to slide the rudder post into the fiberglass hole. After installation the rudder was very stiff. Should I have lubricated the rudder post? If so what should I use?
