keel clean up and bottom paint

I am in the process of removing bottom paint from my C&C 29' (1976). After many hours (days) of sanding and scraping and sanding, paint is off the fiberglass....yippee. I started to remove the remaining paint on the metal (lead) portion of the keel, and have exposed quite a bit of the keel metal. Probably half down the keel now. Looks like there is a slight epoxy layer under the old and tough paint at the keel.

Question... Should I continue to take all the old paint and epoxy off, or just sand some and apply a primer. If I do take continue to take off the old paint to the metal, should I apply a layer of West epoxy over the keel to "fair" it out? I have searched other threads, but did not find a clear answer.

After all done, i plan to use the interprotect 2000 barrier, then micron bottom. Sure will be glad when all done.

Thanks for your time and thoughts. Not sure which is the best direction to go for the keel clean.

Tim

If you are doing a barrier coat, then yes take it all off. Pettit bio blaster works well. Then fair, then barrier.
